Presidents Report

It was a terrific weekend at home, with great results across all age groups. I was lucky enough to watch the Division 2 Ladies in between the 12 and 13 Boys. It was great to see how Wildy has got that group playing. At the start of the season we were desperately worried we wouldn’t get the numbers but now we can see how far they have come, many of which will fit seamlessly into our Division 1 side next year.
Also fantastic that our 12 and 14 girls got the chocolates with many of their teams away on a Basketball trip.
The most pleasing of our results though, was our hard fought effort in the Senior Mens. Our very young team had to come from behind all day and it was great see them grind out a draw in the dying minutes. Im sure Townie was very relieved. Well done fellas.
This week will be a much tougher trip on the road to Myrtleford.
Lets hope we can see similar results across the board.

Match Reports

Div.1 Men v Diamonds drew 2 – 2

Our first point of the season and it took us to comeback twice to get them. 0-0 at halftime despite a few guilt edge chances from us. Start of the second half we fell behind early and after more chances it took a Viduka like backheel from Ben Gardiner to level it up. We were behind again and pushed for an equaliser. Kristian came on and won us a penalty where Coach Townie converted (twice). We searched for a winner with Harry Heath just missing deep into injury time. Clearly our best performance of the season and may it yet continue for future games.

Div.2 Men v Diamonds lost

To be honest, we struggled on the weekend. In the first half we were second to the ball, played as individuals, lost our structure and missed a penalty. Thankfully in the second half we found a bit more composure and tried to right our wrongs and were rewarded with one goal. Yet again, our thanks to the younger members of our squad for backing up and also to Bonners and Brandon for continuing their great form of late. The loss on the weekend now has us in 11th position and our task doesn’t get any easier this weekend when we head to the hills to take on the second placed Myrtleford.

Div.2 Women

Over 35s v Diamonds won 3 – 1

It had been a while since the old guard were given the rare opportunity of playing on Aloysius. The lads were happier than a West Ham supporter on a Sunday after a win to be back home in front of the home crowd but questions were being asked before kick-off, what was Tuksar doing up front with Foxy, what was the leading scorer Wildinho doing back in the centre of defence? What madness had crept over the coach?
Kick off saw us greeted with one of the best in black officiating and a plead for us to play hard but fair, some may say at that point, he was going to be in for a tough day. The pace was frenetic for a bunch of old guys juiced up on nurofen and tiger balm and it didn’t take long for the firm but fair to go out the door with some pretty wanting challenges from both teams setting the crowd alight! Unfortunately for all of our hard work we managed to concede and went into the break 1-0 down. At half time the gaffer asked for us to be a bit more ruthless in front of goals and to continue pushing the ball around to tire them. T-Bone was to have a day out up front and was finally rewarded with a well-placed shot from outside the box and a calmly placed penalty as well (some may say he should have been the ref with his decisions on the day) and Brodes also calmly slotted from an opportunity also created from T-Bone. Well done to Loz, Wildinho, Kewin and Mickett for holding down the middle of the park and congratulations to the whole team for putting in for the whole 70 minutes. Thank you to Doug and Craig for running the line. We now have to wait almost a month for our next AWFA match but there are rumblings of blockbuster between us and a certain youthful side, stayed tuned as management try and find the finances to cover it! We are currently 7th on the ladder but will pick up maximum points over the next three weeks.

Div.3 Men

16 Boys v Diamonds lost 3 – 6

In a 6-3 loss for our 16 boys we produced some decent plays and when we passed the ball around well, proved that we can be a force to be reckoned with. Although it could also be said that at times our passing let us down. MOTM was Rupert who produced a stunning display at fullback with some crucial tackles and stellar overlapping runs.

14 Girls v ADiamonds won 4 – 2

With many girls away we managed to field a side of 10 players thanks to our Under 12s who filled in and made this happen.
The girls played really well as a team passing the ball around and creating many scoring chances. Mya was on fire up front a started the scoring. We went into the half at 1 all and the second half the girls broke away. A great first game to Bailee in the Under 14s.
Alex and Eloise held the defence well and were supported by Sienna and Alice. Daisy, Georgia and Elise were awesome in mid field. Lil was great in goals first half communicating well to the girls.
Goals to Mya, Alice, Lil and Daisy with a cracker! Awards went to Alex(House of trends) Muffin Break- Bailee and Mya and Urban Graze to Eloise.
We look forward to our double header this weekend. Keep up the great team work girls!

13 Boys v Diamonds won 8 – 0

It was Daisy’s birthday on Sunday, and she donned the Captains armband which was fitting as she is quite the leader on the field and at training.
We were a little undermanned today and ended up with 3 injured bodies on the bench. It was great to see the creativity from the team ,all gelling well together and we really dominated the contest. We set up with the Captain in the front half, desperate to get her a birthday goal.
At half time we were 4-0 with Ben cracking 2 home, Dustin nuttying the keeper and Cooper slotting one from a decent run in the box.
Second half saw a spot kick and the ball handed to Daisy, she powered it into the net, something her father T-Bone might want to seek advice on.
Cooper ended up with a hattrick and Alonso got a deserved goal, again from the spot.
Tough game at Wang on Saturday coming up, they are the yard stick and we will be missing Lenny, Ben, Al, Alex and Keely.

12 Boys v Diamonds won 2 – 1

Lambert Park served up its first dewy ground of the year on Sunday, and I reckon the 12s took a little while to adjust to the quicker ball coming on.
We dominated most of the game, but again when it counted we could only put 2 goals in the back of the net. We did have plenty of through balls but found our selves out of position, not shuffling across enough or even too conjested. Maybe too many easter eggs? Maybe not enough training?
Diamonds only had 2-3 opportunities and nailed a late one which had us worried for the last few minutes but we were deserved of the full 3 points.
Its good to be winning these, but we have tonnes of improvement left to get back to the top of our game.
I have a great deal of faith in this team, I know we will see them find form again.
Next week will be a tough gig at Wangaratta on Saturday and Myrtleford on Sunday. We won’t have the ever reliable defence that we take for granted, so others have a great opportunity to step up.
Goals: Cooper and Will

12 Girls v Diamonds won 4 – 3

A great game and team effort from the Spurs, against a determined Diamonds outfit.
The girls were down on numbers, but fought hard all match to come away with the win. Particularly impressive as they were 0-2 behind, early in the match.
Match highlights included some signature midfield and sideline runs from Rylee and Alice, tenacious 2nd and 3rd efforts on the ball by all the girls, and a couple of fantastic strikes by Alice and Rylee.
A brace of goals for both Alice and Rylee meant the full time score was 4-3.
Big thanks to Lucy and Bianca for having a go in goals and doing a great job, in an unfamiliar position. Special mention and awards go to Rylee, Isla and Seanna for their impressive contributions during the match.
