Adam Schefter Doubles Down With Latest Ben Johnson Update
One thing we’ve learned about Adam Schefter is he tends to have the most accurate information of any insider in the NFL spectrum. Initially, the ESPN stalwart insisted the Chicago Bears head coaching job wasn’t something Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson thought much about despite being the obvious hottest candidate in the league. However, a few weeks later, Schefter changed his tune. With whatever new information he had, he stated there was definite interest from the 38-year-old coach.
Have the winds shifted again? Yes, but this time, they’re blowing harder in the same direction. Schefter appeared on The Pat McAfee Show to discuss the ongoing situation in the head coaching market. He made it crystal clear again that Johnson is interested in talking with the Bears. If they request an interview, and every indication is that they will, the coordinator will accept it.
Ben Johnson isn’t hiding why he’s interested.
Every indication to this point is that he is fascinated by quarterback Caleb Williams. His own agent helped the Bears rookie develop his game since high school, so Johnson has information other coaches might not be privy to. He also watched him play twice this season, and Williams had two of his best performances against Detroit. That likely reinforced interest in the Bears job. The trick for Ben Johnson is the interview process. Just because he might be the top candidate from a public perception means little. Jobs are won and lost in interviews. No organization has proven that more lately than Chicago, who passed on Bruce Arians for Marc Trestman because the latter made a better presentation. For everybody talking about how the Bears make the right pitch to Johnson, the same is true for him.
