They include former spy Elizabeth, nurse Joyce, psychiatrist Ibrahim and union leader Ron.
Speaking on BBC Bookclub, Richard revealed he “wasn’t involved in the script or anything like that”, despite having penned the source material.
He said: “It was a deliberate choice because you’re either really involved or you’re not, and I honestly would rather spend my time writing another book than getting involved in all of that so I absolutely left them to it.”
An all star cast including Dame Helen Mirren, Celia Imrie, Pierce Brosnan and Sir Ben Kingsley has been assembled to bring Richard’s protagonists to life.
Meanwhile, Chris Columbus – whose directorial credits include Home Alone, Mrs Doubtfire and Harry Potter – is helming the film.
It comes as Richard is hard at work on the latest novel in the beloved series.
He made the announcement on social media as he posted an exciting image to his Instagram grid page.
The photo showed an empty notebook with the letters ‘TTMC 5’, scribbled at the top of the page.
Richard captioned the update: “Every new book starts somewhere #notes #ThursdayMurderClub2025.”
For the film, its leading stars will be joined by Doctor Who legend David Tennant as well as Jonathan Pryce and Naomi Ackie.
Line of Duty’s Daniel Mays and Inbetweeners star Henry Lloyd-Hughes round out the lineup.
Other announced names include Richard E. Grant, Geoff Bell, Tom Ellis and Paul Freeman.
Richard’s wife, actress Ingrid Oliver – whom he married in 2022 – also has a role in the film.
He previously described the ensemble as the “greatest British cast assembled since the [Harry Potter] movies.”
Thursday Murder Club will be released on Netflix.
