Marvin Richard recognized for scholarship awards
OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- Opelousas alderman and president of the I-49 Association Marvin Richard has spent well over a decade trying to inspire the next generation to excel in the classroom by offering an annual scholarship program. His efforts have now not only inspired students but also gained attention from local leaders.
That mission to do good work fuels Richard as he awards over $1,000 to four high school seniors making their way to college each year.
"I remember where I was at one point in my life and when I gave my life to God, and I decided that I wanted to be right," Richard said. "I want to not only be a part of a community where they would remember me for the positive of the work that I would do every day."
While awarding scholarships this year to Landon Hammond, Dae'ja Babin, Ronkasha Baker and Shardae Horton, Richard was recognized by leaders across Opelousas and St. Landry Parish for the impact he makes in the lives of students.
"This is something that is near and dear to his heart, and when he gets up here to speak, you're going to see how dear and passionate he is about that," Opelousas Mayor Julius Alsandor said.
On top of awarding the scholarships to students for the 14th year in a row, this year was made even more special when Richard was awarded the key to the city.
While honored, Richard says the work to make a difference is still far from over.
"It's amazing to do this," Richard said. "It's amazing to be a part of the people that want to give back to the community. I say this all the time, when you love your community, you invest in your community. It's never about politics, it's about action. So, I want to thank these guys that sit up here that support me faithfully every year."
Richard says he's excited to continue to offer these scholarships each year and make students excited to build their future.
