Pakistan’s Special Representative and UNAMA Chief discuss Afghanistan’s situation

Sadiq Khan, Pakistan’s Special Representative, and Roza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, met on the sidelines of the Girls’ Education Conference in Islamabad.

Roza Otunbayeva traveled to Islamabad to participate in the “Girls’ Education and the Muslim World” conference, which focuses on empowering education for girls in Muslim societies.

Sadiq Khan described his conversation with the UN envoy as “productive” in a post shared on the social media platform X. The discussions emphasized the significance of advancing girls’ education.

The international conference on girls’ education in Muslim communities began on Saturday in Islamabad and will run for two days. It has attracted over 150 international dignitaries, including ministers, ambassadors, scholars, and representatives from organizations like UNESCO, UNICEF, and the World Bank.

Although Pakistan invited the Taliban to participate, the group declined to attend the conference. This decision highlights the ongoing restrictions imposed by the Taliban on girls’ education in Afghanistan.

The conference comes amid a grim backdrop, as Afghanistan remains the only country in the world where girls are banned from receiving education. Women and girls in Afghanistan are deprived of their basic fundamental rights under the Taliban’s rule.

The discussions at the conference stress the urgent need for global action to support Afghan girls and address the systematic denial of education and rights by the Taliban.

This gathering sends a strong message to the world, reaffirming the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure that every girl, regardless of nationality or circumstances, has access to education and opportunities for a better future.
