Opelousas man charged with rape in 30-year-old cold case
OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- An Opelousas man has been arrested in connection with a series of rapes over 30 years ago, authorities said.
Felton Gregory Leday, 74, of Opelousas is charged with one count of first degree rape and three counts of sexual battery allegedly committed over a three-year period starting in October 1994.
The victims were minors at the time of the alleged crimes, according to St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz.
"These alleged crimes represent some of the most difficult and challenging cases law enforcement is entrusted with pursuing," Guidroz said. "The passage of time, the extreme trauma endured by the victims and other factors contribute to their difficulty."
Guidroz said the crimes took place in the Lawtell area.
"The suspect Leday is related to the victims, who state that the acts were committed over a three-year period when the children would visit," he said.
Bond details were not released.
“I want to personally thank the victims for coming forth and placing their trust in us," Guidroz said. "Their bravery in dealing with such a traumatic event over these many years cannot be overstated."
