Vinod Kambli’s double ton to MS Dhoni’s SIX: 6 iconic moments in 50 years of Wankhede Stadium
The iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is one of the most legendary venues for Indian cricket, and will be hitting its 50th anniversary on January 19 2025. The very first match hosted in this stadium was in January 1975.
The iconic 6 hit by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, to secure the 2011 ICC World Cup was also hit on this ground. Dhoni had smacked a delivery towards the long-on on April 2 2011, and guided India to their 2nd ODI World Cup title.
During a Ranji Trophy match against Baroda, Mumbai’s Ravi Shastri smashed Tilak Raj for 6 sixes in an over at Wankhede in January 1985, becoming the 2nd ever batter to achieve the feat of hitting 6 sixes in an over.
Sunil Gavaskar recorded his first double century in India at the Wankhede ground. Sunil scored a spectacular 205 against West Indies in December 1978.
India’s legendary Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s international career of 24-years also came to an end at Wankhede. His 200th Test played against West Indies in 2013 was a big moment for the batting great.
Vinod Kambli announced himself arriving with a massive 224 against England in February 1993 at the Wankhede. This play came in his 3rd Test, which was followed by a double-century against Zimbabwe in the next test match.
The first whitewash (3-0) registered by India, under the lead of Mohammad Azharuddin, as they won over England in the final game at Wankhede in 1993.
