Former Reality Star Ties the Knot 1 Month After Cancer Diagnosis
A former star of The Bachelorette just married her comedian fiancé days before starting chemotherapy for her breast cancer. Katie Thurston and Jeff Arcuri moved up their wedding date so they could officially be husband and wife as her treatments begin.
Thurston went public with her breast cancer diagnosis on February 15. She shared news of the diagnosis on Instagram and added, "I saved the best for last. To my extraordinary husband to be @jeffarcuri - I don't know how I'd do this without you. The selfless love that you smother me in is beyond anything I imagined I'd be blessed with. I love you to the fullest in this lifetime and the next."
On March 23, Thurston and Arcuri shared the news of their low-key wedding day with Us Weekly. They held a small event in their home on March 22, having flown in both his parents and hers.
She noted that on March 22, 2024, she sent a video or Arcuri performing to a friend. Thurston joked he was her future husband, even though they had not met yet. Once they decided to get married before her chemo began, she knew it had to happen on March 22.
Us Weekly noted that Thurston begins chemotherapy in a trial on March 27. She was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and after chemotherapy, her medical team plans to do surgery.
Thurston admitted, "We don't know what the next year looks like." She shared that one night Arcuri told her, "I want to show you that I still love you and that I'm here to stay. I'll get married to you tomorrow." She decided to take him up on it.
After exchanging vows at home with a friend officiating, the group went to dinner at a place in New York City named Da Andrea. They plan to do something bigger after Thurston beats her cancer.
Thurston shared, "It was this kind gesture of him saying, truly, in sickness and in health. He is proving that he's here to stay. He shows up every day and he does it in ways that just continue to surprise."
