Three key positions Manchester United must strengthen in the summer
Manchester United must set their priorities correctly in the summer transfer window to avoid repeating past mistakes.
Read on as we analyse three key positions they must strengthen.
Goalkeeper
Andre Onana has not been entirely convincing since joining from Inter Milan, while Altay Bayindir has been unable to challenge him for the first-choice spot.
Onana has not performed poorly, preventing 1.03 goals in the league this season and 2.81 goals last term—the fourth-best in the division.
However, lapses in concentration have made him unreliable, as evidenced by his three errors leading to goals this season.
United have been linked with Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens, indicating they may be exploring the market for a new shot-stopper.
Central midfield
United need a new central midfielder to partner with Manuel Ugarte in manager Ruben Amorim’s two-man midfield.
Kobbie Mainoo has played that role but has shown he is better suited as a number 10.
Bruno Fernandes has excelled in that position, but to maximise his impact, he must play in a more advanced role.
Toby Collyer is still too inexperienced to be a regular starter, while Christian Eriksen and Casemiro are leaving, further emphasising United’s need for reinforcements in midfield.
They are keenly interested in signing Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha, but it remains to be seen whether they can meet his valuation.
Atalanta’s midfielder Ederson has also been continuously linked with the club, with reports suggesting United are willing to pay £51 million for his signature.
Centre-forward
The Red Devils must prioritise signing a top-quality striker, as they have struggled for goals in the league this season.
Strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have not flourished since joining. They have scored just six league goals between them this term.
Chido Obi has been promoted to the first team but remains too inexperienced to be relied upon.
Links with world-class strikers Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres suggest that the Mancunian giants are actively exploring the market for a new centre-forward.
