St. Landry Parish Superintendent speaks on Sunset Middle School closures
SUNSET, La (KLFY) -- Sunset Middle School is closed following severe weather which caused physical damage to an electrical transmission. This resulted in students being unable to return until repairs are complete.
St. Landry Parish Superintendent Milton Batiste III spoke on the damages and the progress being made.
"Power has been restored in the area, in and around the school and at the school. But because of the high winds, there was extensive damage to transformers at the lines," he said.
Batiste said physical damage to the school's electrical transmission caused a power outage. Although power has been restored, Batiste said rerouting of underground power lines is being done by external contractors who are also working with Entergy.
"We're having to coordinate services between, you know, our central office, a commercial electrical contractor, and Entergy," said Batiste.
Batiste said because of the repairs being made, students cannot attend classes. He added that Sunset Middle will remain closed until repairs are complete and it is safe for students to return.
"We know for sure tomorrow will be closed, but we're planning to work through tomorrow and possibly try to get back in the building on Thursday," he said. "Worst case scenario, Friday."
