'Bachelorette' Star Announces Unfortunate Update Amid Breast Cancer Diagnosis
A former lead from The Bachelorette recently revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. In a new update, Katie Thurston shared news that has forced a pause in her treatment plan.
On March 24, Thurston shared the discouraging update via her Instagram Stories. She revealed she had a liver biopsy scheduled, and the results could turn her anticipated treatment plan upside down. She explained that her doctor "seemed to be leaning more on the cancer in the liver vs optimistic it was nothing."
Thurston added that if the liver biopsy confirmed the spots found on her liver were cancerous, "This would put me at stage 4" in her breast cancer diagnosis.
She also shared she'd "love to hear from my sisters who are stage 4 in terms of quality of life, motherhood, etc."
The decision to do a liver biopsy came after doctors found "two liver lesions," Thurston explained in an update to her Instagram "Boobie Broadcast" channel.
Previously, testing had suggested that Thurston's breast cancer had not metastisized beyond a lymph node. She indicated doctors initially determined she had stage 3 breast cancer.
Immediately after going public with her diagnosis, Thurston worked with a fertility clinic to have embryos frozen. She explained she faced both chemotherapy and radiation, and those treatments could be "harmful to my reproductive health."
On March 26, Thurston provided another brief update via her Instagram Stories. "In the last 48 hours I had my breast, lymph nodes, and liver biopsied as well as a port placement. For now, we wait for the results of the liver biopsy to determine if I can still [proceed] with my original [treatment] plan or if we reroute."
