A look at California’s agricultural commodities
In 2022, there were 24 million acres devoted to farming and ranching in California.
The average farm size was 351 acres. A total of 68,400 farms operated in that year.
The agricultural commodities produced in California in 2022 earned these profits:
• Dairy products, $10 billion
• Grapes, $5.5 billion
• Crops, such as vegetables, berries, tree fruit and nuts, $5.5 billion
• Cattle and calves, $3.6 billion
• Shelled almonds, $3.5 billion
Tulare and Fresno counties were the top-producing areas.
California is the sole producer of several crops in the United States. This means that California grows more than 99% of all almonds, artichokes, celery, garlic, grapes, kiwi fruit, melon, nectarines, plums, olives, pistachios and walnuts.
