Denzel Washington Reveals Which Marvel Movie Made Him Cry
Denzel Washington is proving that he has a sentimental side to him even when it comes to superhero movies.
There was something about one particular Marvel film that got him a little choked up when it came out because it offered something special to him and millions of moviegoers. That movie was Black Panther.
"I cried a little bit when I saw Black Panther," Washington admitted to People. "I was on Broadway [in The Iceman Cometh], in fact, and I went to the premiere, and I wasn’t interested in the red carpet and all that."
The normally stoic actor was moved by the late Chadwick Boseman's performance in the 2018 film, directed by Ryan Coogler.
"So, I went backstage, and I saw Chad and Ryan," Washington added. "I spoke to them and then I sat down and watched the movie. And I felt like the baton had been passed. I was like, ‘Wow, these young boys are gone,’ you know. I felt, I don’t know if the word is ‘relieved,’ but I was proud to see what they had done and seeing where they were headed."
That's a pretty big statement coming from the two-time Oscar winner who is considered one of the finest actors of his generation. His praise for Coogler comes on the heels of the news that the writer-director is creating a role for him in the third installment of the Black Panther franchise.
“For me, it’s about the filmmakers. Especially at this point in my career, I am only interested in working with the best,” Washington told Australia's Today show in November 2024. “I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make. It’s probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done.”
After his current Broadway run of Othello, the 70-year-old actor revealed that he is going to do a Steve McQueen project, the Black Panther sequel, a film version of Othello, and then King Lear. He concluded, "After that, I’m going to retire.”
