I’m a proud prison wife – guards always listen in on our calls, it’s an invasion of privacy
A PRISON wife has told about the constant invasion of privacy she and her husband experience.
Janai Powell, 26, and her hubby Boaz, 27, were childhood sweethearts after getting together aged 14.
But they split up and only reconnected last year despite her former flame being jailed for 17 years on an attempted murder charge.
He’s eligible for parole in four months and Janai, who runs a non-profit and record label, looks forward to when they finally have privacy.
The mum, from Denver, Colorado, said: “Phone calls are recorded and monitored so we talk about certain things at visits only.
“Visits are only six hours per day. I drive two and a half hours one way to see him.
“It’s always a long day for me on visit days but it’s worth it.
“If we want to talk about things we can’t over the phone due to them being monitored then, yes, speak about it in person.
“It’s really an invasion of privacy anyways.”
But Janai’s family aren’t all as happy as she is about her relationship.
She added: “His mum loved us together and encouraged him and I on our marriage. They were all for it.
“My family has their opinions.
“A lot of them keep them to themselves but I know quite a bit feel disappointed and that I made the wrong decision solely based on the fact that he’s in prison.
“And not based on his character which sucks because that’s not fair judgement.
“I try to keep my marriage as separate as possible to protect it until he does come home so people don’t hurt our feelings.
“My mum is accepting, my dad I think he’s growing to accept it but at first no. It is what it is.
“I’m happy and that’s what matters to me right now.”
