‘The White Lotus' Star Reveals Scene That ‘Delighted’ Showrunner Mike White
Carrie Coon shared behind-the-scenes details about one of her biggest scenes from The White Lotus season 3. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the star of the HBO hit reflected on her character Laurie Duffy’s ill-fated one-night stand with Aleksei (Julian Kostov) in the episode “Killer Instincts.”
After the girlfriend of the Russian mentor/jewel thief showed up, Laurie hightailed it out the window with the angry woman right on her trail.
When asked about her character’s quick escape from Aleksei’s room, Coon revealed that The White Lotus creator Mike White took special joy in filming the scene. “Mike was delighted by that scene because we always see a man do this—we always see a man have to scramble out of a bedroom,” she shared. “You rarely see a woman have to scramble out.”
Coon also admitted that she enjoyed doing the stunt. “I love that stuff. I love stunts,” she added. “It was a minimal stunt, but I did actually get to do it myself. I went out that window like 10 times.”
While she got a kick out of Laurie’s exit plan, Coon called Laurie’s situation “humiliating.” Not only did the character have to perform a physical comedy stunt to get out of the room, but moments earlier her Russian lover had asked her to wire him $10,000, presumably as payment for services rendered, but under the guise of bringing his mom to Thailand. “It's so humiliating to think that very likely he's really just after her for [money]. And that's crushing,” Coon admitted.
In a separate interview, Coon told the Los Angeles Times that she appreciated that White “put Laurie in a position where she has to hit bottom.”
“I love the journey she gets to go on,” she added of her White Lotus character. “There’s something really thrilling about it.”
