Kermit the Frog to Deliver Graduation Speech
Commencement speakers at colleges and universities are typically either high-profile alumni, notable members of the community, or celebrities who offer inspiring messages to the graduates. However, the graduates of the University of Maryland will hear from a fictional character at their commencement ceremony.
Last week, the University of Maryland announced that Kermit the Frog would serve as the school's guest speaker for its spring commencement ceremony on May 21.
“Nothing could make these feet happier than to speak at the University of Maryland. I just know the class of 2025 is going to leap into the world and make it a better place, so if a few encouraging words from a frog can help, then I’ll be there!” Kermit said in a statement shared by the university and The Muppets Studio, via CNN.
Though Kermit is a fictional character, he is undeniably accomplished. The university released a promotional video touting his accomplishments, describing Kermit as an environmental advocate, Peabody Award winner, and “friend to all creatures.”
“An international superstar and best-selling author who - in many ways - got his start right here on our campus,” the university said. “From humble beginnings, he has gone on to become one of the world’s most beloved and enduring cultural icons—all while sharing a message of optimism and believing in yourself.”
While it's certainly strange for a puppet to give a commencement address, it's actually quite fitting for the University of Maryland as the iconic frog character was created by University of Maryland alumnus Jim Henson when he was a student.
Henson is one of the most famous puppeteers in history, creating Kermit and the rest of the Muppets as well as the iconic characters of Sesame Street.
It will certainly be interesting to hear what message the legendary Muppet has for the graduates next month.
