Best Machetes of 2025 are Surprisingly Underrated Outdoor Tools

Machetes have caught a bad rap over the years. When most of us think of a machete, we imagine Jason Voorhees wielding one on his crusade against teen pregnancy, and that’s a shame because a good machete will cut much tougher stuff than a few stoned camp counselors.

Truth be told, if you’re currently bringing a hatchet to the trail or campsite, one of these best machetes would probably serve you better. Whether you’re clearing brush, processing firewood, or building a makeshift shelter doesn’t matter, machetes are a hell of a lot more versatile than we typically give them credit for.

At the end of the day, a good machete is a simple tool, and half the battle in finding the right one is not overthinking it. I’ve been using machetes for my outdoor exploits for a long time, so if you’re looking to make the switch yourself, here are six of the best machetes I’d recommend checking out.

Best Machetes of 2025

Best Overall Machete: Woodman’s Pal Leather

Woodman’s Pal Leather Machete

Kurt Spurlock

When it comes to machetes, nothing has impressed me more than the Woodman’s Pal. Designed as a versatile all-purpose “survival axe” for the U.S. armed forces in 1941, the Woodsman’s Pal is so unique, useful, and effective that it’s remained almost entirely unchanged for over 80 years. Part machete, part axe, part trenching tool, and part weapon, there ain’t much you can’t do with a Woodsman’s Pal.

I’ve found its fairly compact, front-weighted design gives the Woodsman’s Pal outstanding chopping power for a twelve-inch blade whether I’m clearing brush or cutting down small trees. The added sickle or “brush hook” works great for cutting close to the ground, and there’s even a hand notch on the back for use when planing larger timber if you’re into bushcraft. It’s an investment, but it’s also the most well-built and versatile tool on this list, as well as the most likely to be passed down for generations.

Pros

  • Built to last a lifetime
  • Machete, axe, shovel, and general survival tool
  • Premium build includes leather-wrapped handle, handmade leather sheath, sharpening stone, and multiple user guides

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Overkill for your average user

Best Traditional Machete: Ontario Knife Co. 1-18

The 1-18 is one of my favorites of the bunch because it takes the bones of an ideal traditional bush machete and adds quality at every touch point. The blade, for instance, is built from incredibly tough 1095 carbon steel, which is more durable than standard 1075/1070 blades and will hold an edge for much longer. It’s also thicker than average at 3.0mm, and given a black zinc-phosphate finish to protect against corrosion.

I’m also a fan of the 1-18’s molded polymer handle, which feels solid in the hand and includes a lanyard hole for added security. The Ontario Knife Co. 1-18 is a bit heavier than most at 1.85 pounds and costs a few dollars more, but you’re getting “Made in the U.S.A.” quality that’s backed by Ontario’s lifetime guarantee.

Pros

  • The ideal 18-inch bush machete
  • High-quality 1095 steel that holds an edge exceptionally well
  • Made in the U.S. with a lifetime warranty

Cons

  • A bit more expensive than South American options
  • Heavier than most
  • Sheath not included

Best Budget Machete: Imacasa Rozador

Imacasa is a Salvadoran company that’s been making high-quality tools for the last 60 years or so. Their machetes are a no-frills, no-fuss product that just plain works, and are designed to handle the hard use and abuse of South America’s agricultural economy. You can find them all over from flea markets to hardware stores, just keep an eye out for the little yellow tag.

If you’re looking for a reliable, long-wearing tool without the tacti-cool tax, you’d do well to pick up just about any Imacasa machete. My personal favorite is their 18-inch Rozador machete, a 2.14mm-thick, 1075 high-carbon steel blade with a natural wood handle.

I like the Rozador because it takes the classic bush machete shape and size, then adds some extra steel to the business end with a large blunt tip. Compared to your traditional profile, I’ve found this shape boosts the machete’s chopping power while also making it more effective at cutting brush as close to the ground as possible.

As for drawbacks, my main complaint with the Imacasa Rozador is that it doesn’t come fully sharpened from the factory, so you’ll have to hone the initial grind yourself before putting it to work. Overall, a small price to pay for a great tool that only costs about $20.

Pros

  • A capable machete for about $20
  • Improved cutting performance over standard 18” bush machete
  • Grooved blade improves flexibility

Cons

  • Ain’t much to look at
  • Requires additional sharpening before use
  • Sheath sold separately

Best Heavy-Duty Machete: Condor Bushcraft Parang

Condor Tool & Knife is the “premium” line of tools from Imacasa, which leverages their decades of experience and tooling to produce more specialized and exotic offerings. Their Bushcraft Parang Machete is my favorite as a general-purpose, heavy-duty chopper because it’s thick 1075 carbon steel blade takes a ton of abuse and holds an edge exceptionally well.

I appreciate that at 13 inches the Bushcraft Parang’s blade is relatively compact yet still gets outstanding leverage thanks to its convex grind and thick construction. It’s more than capable of toppling decent-sized saplings or low-hanging limbs with a single swing, but it’ll also notch its way through larger trees and deadfall as well as any hatchet. You’ll likely want to either wrap the nylon handle for a better grip or rough it up with a heavy-grit sandpaper, but other than that, this one is ready to work right out of the box.

Pros

  • Excellent chopping power
  • Carbon steel takes a lot of abuse between sharpenings
  • Tough nylon sheath included

Cons

  • Handle could use some extra grip
  • Heavy for what it is

Best Lightweight Machete: Tramontina Bolo

Tramontina is the “other” name in agricultural quality machetes down in South America, a popular alternative to Imacasa products that are made in Brazil. Tramontina got its start as a tiny blacksmith shop in 1911, and the brand has since grown to become an international powerhouse with facilities across the globe.

While Tramontina’s classic 18” bush machete might be the most widely used machete in the world, I’d recommend checking out their shorter 14” bolo-style option. I’m a fan of the bolo because it packs roughly the same cutting power as a standard length blade into a much more compact and easy-to-wield package.

Bolo machetes are made with extra heft on the far end to boost their chopping power without adding undue length. In my experience, this makes them particularly effective for cutting a path in tight quarters like heavy brush or heavily wooded areas, and also makes them easier to carry on the hip.

The downside of the shorter overall package is that cutting down low with the Tramontina Bolo requires a little more effort, especially for taller folks. I’ll also note that the blade typically needs a little extra sharpening as it arrives from the factory, but because it’s made from 1070 carbon steel rather than the 1075 used by Imacasa, it’s a little easier to hone a good edge.

Pros

  • Bolo shape adds power without adding length
  • Hard-wearing 1070 high-carbon steel
  • Affordable

Cons

  • No sheath included
  • Requires additional sharpening
  • Handle may require some sanding for larger hands

Best Value Machete: Cold Steel Kukri

Cold Steel Kukri Machete

Historically, the kukri was known as the go-to blade of the Gurkhas, Nepal’s notoriously fierce fighting force. To this day the kukri is recognized as the national weapon of Nepal, but I’m not here to recommend Cold Steel’s Kukri machete as a weapon.

With that being said, all the things that made the kukri such an effective short sword in its time now make it an incredibly powerful chopping tool for day-to-day use. The curved and heavily front-weighted blade generates a great deal of power, while the narrower section closer to the handles works great as a general-purpose knife blade. My favorite part about this kukri is that despite its excellent chopping power, it only weighs one pound, handle and all, making it one of the lightest and easiest to wield machetes on this list.

The only drawback I’ve found with the Cold Steel Kukri is that because its blade is made from 65Mn steel, it’s a bit more rust-prone than other machetes on our list. Cold Steel gives their Kukri a matte-black anti-rust finish to compensate, but you’ll want to stay on top of it as the finish wears away with heavy use.

Pros

  • Big chopping power in a lightweight package
  • Ideal for clearing small trees and limbs
  • Affordable
  • Ballistic nylon sheath included

Cons

  • Smaller size isn’t ideal for clearing large swathes of thick brush
  • Polycarbonate handle is extremely grippy but can be rough on the hands

What to Look for in a Machete

In my experience, there are a few basic things you’ll want to look for when choosing the right machete. There’s plenty of room for nuance here, but to keep it simple I’d recommend paying attention to (a) weight, (b) length, and (c ) the type of steel your machete is made from.

I start with weight because it represents an important tradeoff. The lightest machetes weigh around one pound, while the heavier ones can be as much as two pounds. Anything above two pounds is probably going to wear you out too fast to be useful although two-handed machetes are a possible exception to that rule.

The Woodman’s Pal machete weights in at 1.5 pounds, balancing outright chopping power with all-day usability.

Kurt Spurlock

Heavier machetes typically have more raw chopping power than lighter ones, although other factors can also play a role (more on that below). As a general rule of thumb, I recommend machetes closer to one pound for first time and/or occasional users, while folks with more stamina and skill will generally benefit from a weightier blade.

When it comes to length, an eighteen inch blade is universally considered the “gold standard” for a functional machete. These tools are long enough to give you good reach high and low, as well as good momentum/leverage in your swing, even when using a lighter machete. Shorter blades are generally more convenient for tighter and more densely wooded areas, however they require more heavily weighted blades to do the same amount of work in my experience.

A longer blade makes for better leverage, but also makes a machete less convenient to carry and swing.

Imacasa

Finally, a word on steel quality. Most machetes are made from either 1070 or 1075 high-carbon steel. Both are quality metals, the main difference being that 1075 has a slightly higher carbon content. This makes 1075 more difficult to sharpen, but once it’s sharp it’ll stay that way for longer.

Some machetes are made from even tougher stuff, like the 1095 high-carbon steel found in OKC 1-18, while others are made from comparable alternatives like the 65Mn in Cold Steel’s Kukri. Generally speaking, higher quality steel is what makes an expensive machete worth buying, as it will last longer and hold an edge better than budget-friendly alternatives.

Why You Should Trust Me

Some folks like to bring a hatchet when they head into the woods, but for me, it’s always been a machete. My introduction to the usefulness of a good machete started at a young age, clearing trails through the thick brush of my families’ property in the north Georgia mountains.

Nowadays a good machete has become a standard feature of my outdoors kit, whether I’m going camping with friends, spending a weekend hunting, or bushwacking my way to a new fishing hole.
