'White Lotus' Star Left Avengers Franchise Over Paycheck
The White Lotus star Carrie Coon dabbled in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when she lent her voice to Proxima Midnight in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War.
Coon's voice resonated with the audience, so it seemed like the logical next step was to bring her back for 2019's Avengers: Endgame. An invite was extended but Coon declined, and now her husband, the actor and playwright Tracy Letts, has revealed the reason.
Speaking to The Big Picture podcast, Letts revealed that it was all about the Benjamins, or lack thereof.
"I believe [Marvel] went to her for the second one, and they asked her to be in the second one," he shared on the podcast, via People. "And she said, 'Well, the first one is the most successful movie ever made. Are you going to pay me any more money?' And they said, 'No, We're not going to pay you any more money.'"
Avengers: Infinity War hauled in more than $2 billion at the box office worldwide. Though the film debuted in April 2018, it finished the year as the highest-grossing movie.

"She said, 'Wow, you're not going to pay me any more money, then I don't think I'm going to do it,'" Letts said. "And they said, 'Well, you should feel yourself fortunate to be part of the Marvel Universe.' So she declined....We would've made a bigger deal out of this, but it would have involved us watching the movies and we weren't going to do that."
For the record, Avengers: Infinity War eclipsed Endgame's box office numbers, hauling in a whopping $2.7 billion worldwide, sans Coon and Letts, who added on the podcast that the couple have yet to watch either film.
Coon, of course, is known for her role on HBO's The Leftovers and The Gilded Age. She plays Laurie in season 3 of The White Lotus, a corporate lawyer from New York who joins her her two friends, Kate (Leslie Bibb) and Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan), on a girls trip to Thailand.
The season 3 finale of The White Lotus streams Sunday on Max.
