Over 800 gamers gather in Troy for ECAC Esports Spring Showdown
TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Over 800 gamers from across the state will be in Troy over the weekend for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Esports Spring Showdown. It's taking place at RPI.
Officials said interest in esports is growing, especially on the collegiate level. It's become a great way for universities to increase enrollment as many of the gamers are STEM majors.
Community leaders touched on the economic impact of the competition when it was announced in February.
"Our restaurants, our hotels, shops, are all gonna be full. That makes us money that helps us pay the bills, but what it really does is expose our area to folks coming in from all over, and they take a look at the beauty around here and they say this is where I wanna be," Rensselaer County Exec. Steve McLaughlin said.
The competition is free to the public.
