“Clem was not just a drummer; he was the heartbeat of Blondie,” it continued. “His talent, energy, and passion for music were unmatched, and his contributions to our sound and success are immeasurable. His vibrant spirit, infectious enthusiasm and rock solid work ethic touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Though Burke was best known for his work with Blondie, he collaborated with dozens of iconic artists throughout his career, leading him to describe himself as a “rock & roll survivalist.” In addition to a short gig with the Ramones, where he went by the name Elvis Ramone, Burke played with Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, the Go-Go’s, Eurythmics, Bob Geldof, Joan Jett, and Nancy Sinatra,
The New Jersey-born Burke joined Blondie in 1975 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with his bandmates in 2006.
“His influence and contributions have spanned decades and genres, leaving an indelible mark on every project he was a part of,” wrote Blondie in their post, adding: “His legacy will live on through the tremendous amount of music he created and the countless lives he touched.”
The specifics of Burke’s cancer were not shared.
