Mariska Hargitay is making her feature directing debut with a very personal project.
On Tuesday (April 8), it was announced that the 61-year-old Law & Order: SVU star will be directing the new documentary My Mom Jayne for HBO about her late mother, the iconic actress Jayne Mansfield.
The documentary, which will be released in June, will follow Mariska “as she seeks to know, understand, and embrace her mother for the first time,” according to the documentary’s logline.

It’s a search for the mother I never knew, an integration of a part of myself I’d never owned, and a reclaiming of my mother’s story and my own truth,” Mariska shared in a statement via The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve always believed there is strength in vulnerability, and the process of making this film has confirmed that belief like never before.”
Jayne died in a car accident in 1967 when she was 34-years-old. Mariska, who was 3 at the time, was involved in the accident as well but survived, as did two older siblings.
In a recent interview, Mariska opened up about how much longer she plans on staying on SVU.
