New blackout-style license plates get the green light in Kansas, what that means
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Drivers in Kansas will soon have three new license plate options to choose from thanks to action taken by the state's lawmakers this week.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed House Bill 2201 on Wednesday, April 9 which allows Kansans to acquire three new types of distinctive license plates. These new designs include the National Future Farmers of America (FFA), Route 66 Association of Kansas and blackout-style license plates.
The Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) will be able to start issuing the new license plates to the state's drivers on and after Jan. 1, 2026. Drivers will be able to acquire these new plates by paying certain fees.
- National FFA Organization - royalty fees of $25-$100 as set by the organization. Funds collected by these sales will go to benefit the Kansas FFA Foundation.
- Route 66 Association of Kansas - royalty fees of $25-$100 as set by the association. Funds collected by these sales will go back to benefit the Route 66 Association of Kansas.
- Blackout-style plates - drivers will be charged a $50 fee. Cash collected by the state would be used to pay for costs associated with replacing older license plates.
Kansas lawmakers and the KDOR pushed for the addition of the new blackout-style plates, citing cases in other states where the plates proved to be exceedingly popular after they were introduced. The plates are currently in use in several states including Colorado, Iowa and Minnesota.
Kansans will be able to acquire the new plates by checking the KDOR's website. This website currently displays a list of available distinctive license plate options you can buy in the Sunflower State.
