They can be pricey, and big discounts on these shoes are rare. That’s why our eyes popped when we saw that Zappos was running a sale on one of the brand's ultra-cushioned running shoes. The On Cloudmonster Running Shoe is on sale for $136, a 20% discount from its normal price of $170. This first-generation Cloudmonster (not to be confused with the similar Cloudmonster 2) is available in one colorway, Black/Acacia, at that price. The Cloudmonster is On’s version of a max-cushion training shoe. The first thing you’ll notice is its thick midsole with the brand’s signature CloudTec cushioning system. Essentially, CloudTec is a series of hollow tubes that compress on landing and spring back into shape, sort of like mini shock absorbers. They’re paired with another On trademark—a Speedboard layer that acts like a springy diving board, stabilizing the large midsole and providing bounce at toe-off. The sole has pronounced toe spring—it curves upward at the front—to promote smooth transitions, and rubber placements at the heel and forefoot generate good grip for pavement running. Although this Cloudmonster lacks the upgraded Helion foam of the Cloudmonster 2, it does have one notable advantage: It’s 25 grams lighter.
