Newcastle want Yahia Fofana this summer
Newcastle United are setting their sights on one of Europe’s most exciting young goalkeepers — Yahia Fofana of Angers SCO.
According to Football Insider, Eddie Howe is actively scouting the 24-year-old Ivorian shot-stopper as a potential long-term solution between the sticks. But the Magpies aren’t alone. Premier League rivals Wolves and Brentford are also circling, keeping tabs on the Angers No.1 ahead of a possible summer swoop.
Fofana: From Le Havre Prospect to Africa Cup of Nations Hero
Having started his professional journey at Le Havre, Fofana made the leap to Angers in 2022 and has flourished ever since. Now widely regarded as one of the best emerging goalkeepers in European football, his recent performances have turned heads across the continent.
After switching international allegiance from France to Ivory Coast, Fofana played a pivotal role in their victorious 2024 AFCON campaign. His club form has been equally outstanding — topping the charts for post-shot expected goals (PSxG) across Europe’s top five leagues.
Premier League Clubs Queue Up for a £15M Bargain
Scouts from Newcastle, Wolves, and Brentford were recently spotted at the Parc des Princes as Fofana put in a strong showing against PSG, despite a narrow 1-0 loss. With just 12 months remaining on his contract, Angers could be willing to cash in for around £15 million — a potential bargain for a player of his quality.
Newcastle, in particular, are eager to rejuvenate their goalkeeping ranks, with veterans Martin Dubravka and Nick Pope edging closer to retirement. Fofana could be the ideal long-term successor.
As the summer window nears, expect a fierce three-way battle for Fofana’s signature — and Newcastle may just be leading the race.
