Google Pixel 9a review: A budget phone with comparable experience to its flagship siblings

As Google's Pixel "a" phones have routinely done for years, the Pixel 9a delivers a near-premium experience for a significantly lower cost than the company's flagship phones.

Using the Pixel 9a largely feels like using the flagship Pixel 9, as it closely mirrors the latter's performance, screen quality, and camera capabilities for a $300 lower price tag. Indeed, the Pixel 9a challenges the Pixel 9's value proposition to the point that, despite the flagship's higher-end design and top-tier 5G connectivity, it's difficult to justify the added cost for most people, especially as the Pixel 9a offers longer battery life than the Pixel 9 in our testing.

To get an appreciably better phone, you'd need to spend at least $500 more and opt for a Pixel 9 Pro model. However, those seeking the best budget Android phone should look no further than the Pixel 9a.

Design: A sleek, minimalist form with a few compromises

The Pixel 9a is nearly a perfect rectangular slab with flat edges and an almost totally flat back. Indeed, the Pixel 9a's camera oval barely protrudes from the back, and we haven't seen such a flush camera on a phone since the Essential Phone in 2017.

The nearly flat camera is a departure from Google's usual Pixel camera bar design, which stretches across the phone and protrudes, but it suits the Pixel 9a's minimalist design well.

Like most Pixel "a" models, the Pixel 9a's frame is aluminum, and the back is a matte-textured plastic, but it'll still please anyone seeking a premium look and feel in a phone. To be sure, the Pixel 9, with its aluminum frame, clear glass back, and extra 0.4 ounces of weight, still looks and feels like the more expensive phone.

The Pixel 9a's black borders around the display are also noticeably thicker than those on the Pixel 9, which dilutes the budget model's near-premium aesthetic.

Performance: On par with Google's flagship models

As it runs the same Google Tensor G4 processor as the flagship Pixel 9 phones, the Pixel 9a works just as quickly and smoothly in day-to-day use for apps, games, and AI features like Gemini or Magic Editor in Google Photos.

The Pixel 9a scores slightly lower than the Pixel 9 in performance and AI benchmark results, likely due to the former's 8GB of RAM compared to the latter's 12GB. Yet, as I mentioned above, there is no perceivable difference.

Based on my recent experience with the 2021 Pixel 6 that runs on the original Tensor processor, the Pixel 9a running the Tensor G4 should stay smooth and snappy for at least three years.

Yet, in benchmarks, Google's Tensor G4 processor scores significantly lower than the Samsung Galaxy S25 series' Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. It could indicate that the Pixel 9a's long-term performance may not keep up for more discerning users at the end of Google's generous seven-year support window for Android upgrades and security updates.

Still, even if performance isn't buttery smooth in the long term, it's great that you can use the Pixel 9a for as long as seven years with the knowledge that it'll keep getting Android and features upgrades, let alone security updates.

Display: A high-end OLED screen

On the Pixel 9a, the Tensor G4 is paired with the same Google Actua display as the Pixel 9. It's a 6.3-inch OLED panel with a 60-120Hz refresh rate, 1080p resolution, and up to 2,700 nits peak brightness (1,800 for HDR).

It's set to 60Hz by default, but you can enable the Smooth Display setting to get a notably smoother 120Hz refresh rate. The result is a fluid, bright, sharp, high-end experience with no complaints when swiping around the Android operating system, apps, and games.

The only difference is the Pixel 9a's Gorilla Glass 3 cover glass compared to the Pixel 9's Gorilla Glass Victus 2. While the latter is technically more durable, the former is plenty durable for most people.

5G connectivity: Lack of top-tier networks isn't a dealbreaker

A common limitation of more affordable phones is their lack of connectivity to the fastest 5G networks, which are known as mmWave 5G or high-band 5G. Google's Pixel "a" phones have historically lacked mmWave 5G connectivity by default, and the Pixel 9a maintains this pattern.

Most people aren't likely to notice a difference in day-to-day use. The low- and mid-band 5G networks compatible with the Pixel 9a are plenty fast on any carrier to support pretty much anything you'd do on the phone, whether scrolling through photo-heavy social media apps, streaming videos, or downloading a large game.

Plus, not all carrier plans include access to mmWave 5G networks. Many of the best cell phone plans from MVNOs and budget carriers, like Mint Mobile, don't offer mmWave 5G connectivity, and the best cheap cell phone plans may already be best suited to the budget-minded Pixel 9a owner.

Cameras: Flagship-level quality, apart from zooming

Cameras have been a Pixel strongpoint ever since the very first model was released in 2016, and the same goes for every Pixel "a" model so far. The same can easily be said about the Pixel 9a's 48MP main camera and 13MP ultrawide, which compete with flagship phones that cost at least twice as much.

The balance of brightness, contrast, and color is also near perfect — brights aren't too bright, darks aren't too dark, and every detail is captured. It even captures surprisingly sharp shots of moving subjects (my kids) in low-light conditions, which further backs up the Pixel 9a's value proposition, whether you're looking for a budget or premium device.

The Pixel 9a has a capable digital zoom that nevertheless degrades in quality the more you zoom in relative to the 2x optical-quality zoom of the Pixel 9 and the dedicated 5x optical zoom lenses of the Pixel 9 Pro models. However, photo quality is only perceptively degraded when you crop into a 2x photo or zoom in further than 2x to take a shot. Otherwise, 2x photos look as good as 1x shots when flicking through photos in the Google Photos app on a phone's relatively small display or even a larger computer monitor.

The Pixel 9a comes with almost every AI-powered camera and photo feature in Google's photography suite, like Add Me, Magic Editor, and Magic Eraser. It's only missing Action Pan, available on the flagship Pixel 9 series and designed to capture a moving subject while creating a blurred background.

Like the Pixel 9, the Pixel 9a can record video up to 4K resolution at 60 frames-per-second (fps). However, it lacks the ability to capture video in 10-bit HDR, so colors, brightness, and contrast won't be as formidable as the best Google Pixel phones. Still, videos taken with the Pixel 9a will easily please most people.

Battery life and charging: Battery outperforms the Pixel 9 and most small-size phones

The Pixel 9a, with a 5,100mAh battery, ended our intensive battery test with a superb 66% result for a phone with a 6.3-inch display. It beat the 6.3-inch Pixel 9's 60% result and the 6.3-inch Galaxy S25's 62% result. The Pixel 9a sits among the 6.1-inch iPhone 16 (65%) and iPhone 16e (68%) as one of the smaller devices among the best phones for battery life.

The Pixel 9a supports fast charging up to 23W, which is slightly slower than the Pixel 9's 27W but fast enough and similar to Apple's fast charging for its current flagship models. You can also wirelessly charge the Pixel 9a with the base Qi standard, which works at a slow 7.5W rate.

Should you buy the Pixel 9a?

If you're deciding between the Pixel 9a and the Pixel 9 or are generally seeking a budget Android phone with flagship-level performance, we wholeheartedly recommend the Pixel 9a.

In a pragmatic utopia, the Pixel 9a is the only phone most people ever need. Its ratio of value, performance, design, camera quality, and features is quite simply unmatched. It's just a shame it doesn't come in an option larger than 6.3 inches for those who prefer larger displays.

Though its camera system lacks the optical-quality zoom of higher-end phones, the Pixel 9a is a sincere contender as the best Android phone you can buy, especially for its budget value.
