Democrats propose renaming Earth to Trump while mocking Gulf of Mexico plans
In the 11 weeks (yes, it’s only been 11 weeks) since Donald Trump returned to the White House, it feels like we’ve all been living on his planet.
So perhaps it should come as no surprise that one legislator in the US Congress has suggested formally changing Earth’s name to ‘Trump’.
What’s more eyebrow-raising is who proposed the idea in the House Natural Resources Committee on Wednesday: Democrat Jared Huffman of California.
His bold plan came up as the committee discussed a bill from Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene to make the President’s renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America official.
Huffman and his Democratic colleagues took the opportunity to ridicule the proposal with a series of outlandish amendments to the bill.
Perhaps the body of water could instead be the Gulf of ‘Ignorance’, ‘Incompetence’, ‘Arrogance’, ‘Delusion’ or ‘Boot-Licking Sycophancy’, they suggested.
Another member proposed calling it the Gulf of America Should Rejoin The Paris Agreement.
But the flourish came from Huffman, who spoke as a picture showing an monumental gold statue of Trump riding a horse was placed beside him.
He said: ‘If we’re going to waste this committee’s time just to glorify one man’s ego, I propose we at least be efficient about this, right? I mean, that’s the theme of the day, efficiency from Doge and others.
‘And so the great Wayne Gretzky once said, “You don’t skate to where the puck is, you skate to where it’s going to be.”
‘My amendment tries to do that. I mean, why do all of this Trump glorification in a piecemeal manner? Why not cut to the chase?
‘I am proposing that we rename the entire planet “Trump”.’
Huffman later added: ‘Let’s stop pretending that any of this is about patriotism or efficiency, it is all about power, control and making everything about one man.
‘So let’s just make it official, show Donald Trump how mindlessly cultish you are. He is going to love this.’
Bruce Westerman, the Republican chairman of the committee, said he appreciated ‘the ranking member’s enthusiasm for President Trump’, but added the amendment was outside the scope of the bill.
Having made his point, Huffman withdrew it before it went to a vote.
He and his fellow Democrats spent much of the hours-long meeting expressing their bewilderment at considering a bill to rename a body of water amid crises in the economy and the climate.
And they’re not the only ones mocking Trump and his top team.
Videos featuring AI versions of the President, his close advisor Elon Musk and Vice President JD Vance have gone viral in China after tariffs on the country were hiked up to 125% yesterday.
In the clips, the trio are shown working on a Nike production line, ridiculing their goal of bringing manufacturing back to the US.
Prices of items made in China – like many toys, shoes and electronics – are expected to rise in the US if the tariffs are kept in place. Stocks in companies that work closely with China have taken a hit since the announcement as a result.
The plan to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America was considered important enough by Trump that he included it in his inauguration speech on January 20.
Soon afterwards, Google announced the alteration would soon appear in its Maps feature.
The bill from Greene, a controversial figure who has supported several outlandish conspiracy theories, would direct federal agencies ‘to update their documents and maps to incorporate the new name’.
