Jack Nicklaus Predicts Winner of 2025 Masters Tournament
The 2025 Masters Tournament is officially underway as the world's best golfers flocked to Augusta, GA this week for the first major tournament of the year.
Entering the tournament this weekend, reigning champion Scottie Scheffler came in as the clear favorite. However, he had one golfer hot on his heels in the betting market as Rory McIlroy entered as a close second with a significant gap between the man in search of his career gland slam and Jon Rahm.
Honorary starters Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson teed off to get the tournament started before entering a press conference. Nicklaus revealed he spoke with McIlroy ahead of the tournament to lay out his strategy - of which the 18-time major winner wouldn't change a thing.
“I think it’s about time that Rory won and I sat down with him last week,” Nicklaus said. “I said ‘I know you prepared for Augusta, tell me how you’re going to play the golf course,'" Nicklaus said, via the Independent.
The six-time Masters winner suggested McIlroy has lacked "discipline" in his game plan - until now.
“We went through it shot for shot, we got done with the round, I didn’t open my mouth and I said ‘I wouldn’t change a thing’. That’s exactly the way I would try to play the golf course," he added. "The discipline to do that is what Rory has lacked in my opinion. He’s got all the shots, he’s got all the game."
“He certainly is as talented as anybody in the game, but if you go back through his history in the last few years he gets to a place and all of a sudden a seven or an eight pops up and that keeps him from getting where he needs to go.”
Nicklaus, Player and Watson all picked McIlroy to win.
