Full list of Easter bank holiday travel disruption on roads, rail and flights
If you are travelling this Easter bank holiday, prepare for delays and disruption across UK flights, roads and railways.
While the Met Office forecast predicts ‘changeable’ weather for the Easter egg hunts, nothing can ruin the long weekend between Good Friday and Easter Sunday for millions of Britons getting ready to hit the road.
More than 19 million car journeys are expected on Good Friday alone, meaning congestion and bottlenecks are likely on key routes.
Flights through Gatwick Airport also face some disruption, along with the closure of London Euston station.
We’ve rounded up all the major issues that could disrupt Easter travel so you can steer clear.
Where are the UK’s busiest roads on Easter?
The busiest travel day is set to be Thursday, April 17, when around 19.8 million drivers are forecast on the roads, according to an AA survey of more than 11,000 motorists.
The motoring expert warned of traffic hotspots forming around town and city centres, shopping and retail parks and the following areas:
- Near London, a stretch of the M25 between the junctions of M23 and M40 is likely to see heavy traffic. This part of the motorway is a key route to both Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
- The M5 in Bristol has also been identified as a hotspot along with roads around Blackpool, the M6 in Birmingham and the A303 in Wiltshire.
- Meanwhile, the M20 in Kent between junction J8 (Maidstone) and J9 (Ashford) will have a reduced 50mph speed limit and narrow lanes as part of National Highways traffic management.
Shaun Jones, the AA Patrol of the year, said drivers should make sure their vehicle is in ‘top condition’ to avoid breakdowns and plan their journey, including where to fuel up.
Train travel disruption over Easter weekend
If you haven’t booked your tickets already, passengers are advised to travel on either side of Easter to avoid the Euston disruption as Euston is closed between Saturday, April 19 and Monday, April 21.

London Easter rail travel
- Elizabeth line will have a reduced service between Paddington and Heathrow Terminal 4 and Maidenhead between Friday, April 18 and Monday, April 21, while Acton Main Line, West Ealing and Hanwell stations are closed
- All lines to and from London Euston and the station will be closed between Saturday, April 19, and Monday, April 21
- London Victoria will have no Southeastern services over the Easter weekend with trains diverted, while Southern and Gatwick Express will run a reduced timetable to and from Victoria
- London Paddington will have disruptive work during the weekend
Train service will also see disruption and changes between Manchester and Stockport, Cambridge, Southampton and the Leeds and Huddersfield area.
In Scotland, track renewal works mean buses replace trains between Carlisle and Glasgow and Carlisle and Edinburgh.
What UK airports have disruption during Easter?
Gatwick Airport passengers should brace themselves for disruption after a strike announcement.
Members of Unite will strike at the UK’s second busiest airport over the Easter weekend over a pension row.
This affects baggage handlers, check-in staff and flight dispatchers working for Norwegian, Delta, TAP and Air Peace, Unite said.
In total, some 11,282 flights are due to depart from UK airports between Good Friday and Easter Monday, according to aviation analyst Cirium.
This means that other major airports like Heathrow and Stansted are likely to be buzzing.
