Celery sticks sold at Walmart recalled in multiple states due to listeria risk
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Federal health officials say celery sticks sold in multiple states, including Kansas, are being recalled Friday as they may be contaminated with listeria.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported on April 10 that Duda Farm Fresh Foods, Inc., based out of California, is voluntarily recalling a single production lot of washed and ready-to-eat celery sticks as they may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. The recalled celery sticks were distributed to Walmart stores in Alabama, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Wyoming and the District of Columbia.
The FDA said the "Marketside Celery Sticks" come in 4-packs that are 6.4 oz in net weight, have a lot code of P047650 and a UPC code of 6 81131 16151 0. They have a best if used by date of March 23, 2025 but federal health officials are worried some people may still have some of the recalled celery sticks in their freezers.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections among the young, older adults and those with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as a high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
People who purchased the recalled celery sticks are encouraged to throw them away to avoid the possibility of coming into contact with listeria. This recall does not impact any other Marketside or Duda Farm Fresh Foods, Inc. products.
