Max Homa Drilled a Marshal at the Masters This Week
Max Homa wrapped up the first round of the 2025 Masters at two-over par, shooting a 74. But there was one moment that quickly went viral as Homa attempted to navigate out of the rough from behind a tree.
While the 34-year-old played a great shot while avoiding the tree, his ball unfortunately found a roadblock as it bounced down the fairway — a marshal.
Homa's well-hit shot bounced directly into the back of a marshal, who was facing the opposite direction (which appeared to be his job in this instance).
This was Max Homa on the par 5 8th hole at Augusta today. There’s just so much to unpack here…I can’t stop laughing???????? pic.twitter.com/cwv9I4cWrM

A voice, believed to be Homa's, can be hard shouting, "come on, dude!" after the ball hits the marshal.
While it was an unfortunate bounce for Homa, one fan pointed out that the marshal is there to signal to upcoming players when the green is clear. However, the reactions were still a bit mixed, with some voicing displeasure over how things played out.
The same post featured a follow-up video, posing the question of why the marshal was in the middle of the fairway with the flag.
I keep thinking this happened up near the green but Homa was just punching it out. This was his 3rd from 158 yards out…why was this dude standing in the middle of the fairway with a flag in his hands??????????? pic.twitter.com/N8rWszK6pT

"The flag guy is a course marshal to signal if it’s clear yet. It’s not his fault," read another comment.
"Why is this guy standing in the middle of the fairway. Masters is over the top with this bs!" said one fan.
While the moment brought some controversy, it's an interesting back-and-forth debate, although it does seem the marshal was supposed to be at least somewhere in that general area. Unfortunate for Homa, regardless, though.
