Katy Perry & Lauren Sanchez unveil new sleek women’s Blue Origin spacesuits after vowing to ‘put the a** in astronaut’
KATY Perry is ready for lift-off in great fashion as she revealed a stylish space suit ahead of her trip on Jeff Bezos’ rocket tomorrow.
The pop star posed with Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sánchez on Sunday in sleek, custom-designed outfits before their all-female Blue Origin mission.
She said: “We’re putting the ‘a**’ in astronaut!”
Katy, 40, will blast off on Monday morning from West Texas as part of Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission — a history-making, 11-minute flight set to be the first all-female space trip since 1963.
The “Roar” singer will also be joined by journalist Gayle King, engineer Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
The blue flight suits, designed by Sánchez in collaboration with luxury fashion duo Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim of Monse, were revealed by Perry on Instagram.
“Happy International Day of Human Space Flight. Forever in awe of the Universe and its alignment,” she wrote, alongside photos in a jumpsuit labelled ‘Perry’ with ‘Blue Origin’ down the arm.
“Let’s reimagine the flight suit,” Sánchez told The New York Times.
“Usually, you know, these suits are made for a man. Then they get tailored to fit a woman.”
She added: “I think the suits are elegant but they also bring a little spice to space.”
Designer Fernando Garcia noted: “We even had a meeting on what underwear Lauren is going to wear…” to which she responded “Skims!”, Kim Kardashian’s brand.
The mission — scheduled for April 14 at 9.30am ET — will see the six women ride one of Bezos’ autonomous rockets 62 miles above Earth.
The capsule will hover in zero gravity for four minutes, offering a view of the planet’s curvature before gliding back to the desert floor.
Despite the quick trip, Perry says she’s taking her role seriously.
Speaking with the Associated Press at her California rehearsal space, she said: “I am talking to myself every day and going, ‘You’re brave, you’re bold, you are doing this for the next generation to inspire so many different people but especially young girls to go, ‘I’ll go to space in the future.’ No limitations.’”
She added: “I’m really excited about the engineering of it all. I’m excited to learn more about STEM and just the math about what it takes to accomplish this type of thing.”
Her prep has included reading astrophysics, listening to Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, and embracing what she called her “feminine divine.”
“Being a mother just makes you level up with that type of power,” she said, referring to Daisy, her four-year-old daughter with Orlando Bloom.
Blue Origin has flown 30 tourist missions since 2021, but this will be its first all-female crew — and only the second in history, following Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo flight in 1963.
Katy previously told Elle magazine about how she’s keeping it cool before her space trip.
She said: “I don’t have any time to be nervous; I don’t have time to be worried.
“I’m going to feel something when they go, ‘10, 9, 8, 7…’ but until then, we’ve got stuff to do.”
She’s even compiling a launch playlist — including David Bowie, Nicki Minaj, the B-52s, and one of her own songs.
Inside Blue Origin astro-tourist training
Blue Origin has a training programme to prepare astro-tourists for the suborbital spaceflight experience:
Passengers will be familiarised with the capsule, training for emergency procedures, and zero-gravity simulation flights.
The training ends with mission rehearsals and a final exam.
On their first day of training, crew are “fitted in customised flight suits” to allow the group to acclimate to their flight capsule.
They will enter a life-sized test capsule where they will see their designated seats.
The final training will include zero-gravity simulation flights for the group to get used to the feeling of weightlessness.
Members of the Blue Origin staff will familiarise the crew with the layout of the capsule.
Passengers will know the location of each camera, but also oxygen masks in case of an emergency, as well as how to correspond with ground control.
