Golfer Lost Over $500,000 on Final Hole at the Masters on Sunday
The first major tournament of the year came to a close over the weekend at Rory McIlroy took down Justin Rose in a tiebreak to win the Masters.
McIlroy joined the elite company of Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only golfers to win the career grand slam - winning golf's four majors: the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open and the Open Championship. Woods remains the only golfer to hold all four major titles at the same time, which he accomplished over the final three majors in 2000 and the Masters in 2001.
While McIlroy got the win - and a $4.2 million pay day, Ludvig Aberg saw his paycheck cut nearly in half over the final two holes of the tournament. The Swedish native sat at 10-under for the tournament and just one shot back of the lead while stepping onto the tee on No. 17.
He went on to card a bogey on No. 17 and a triple bogey on No. 18 dropping him from 10-under and solo third place to 6-under and solo seventh place. Third place would have netted him $1.4 million, but instead he walked away with $703,000.
The triple bogey on No. 18 alone cost him over $500,000 according to sports business insider Darren Rovell.

Aberg certainly isn't hurting for money after hauling in a six-figure paycheck, but to lose around $700,000 in about a half of an hour likely stings for the young star who finished solo second to Scottie Scheffler in 2024.
