Trump’s new plan for illegal immigrants: Take money and leave the US
Donald Trump has unveiled a new plan in which illegal immigrants, if they voluntarily leave the United States, will not only receive financial assistance but may also have the possibility of returning legally in the future.
On Tuesday, April 15, Trump announced in an interview with Fox News that he intends to implement a new program for illegal immigrants. According to this plan, individuals who voluntarily leave the U.S. will receive financial aid and travel tickets from the government.
He stated, “We will give them some money and a ticket, and we will cooperate with them. If they are good people, we might bring them back.” Trump added that this policy, along with mass expulsions, is part of his new strategy to curb illegal immigration.
However, Kristi Noem, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, had previously emphasized that immigrants who are detained and deported will be permanently barred from re-entering the U.S.
Currently, only a few migrants in special circumstances, through non-governmental organizations such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM), receive financial support for voluntary return. However, what Trump has proposed is the first official government program in this regard.
Trump, who has always maintained a hardline stance on illegal immigration, sharply criticized Joe Biden’s policies during his election campaign and promised to regain control of the borders through a more decisive approach.
Previously, he had proposed measures, including a daily fine of up to $998 for immigrants who have deportation orders but fail to leave the country. These fines were based on a law from 1996 and were implemented during Trump’s first term in 2018.
Some of his administration’s officials have stated that these fines could even be retroactively applied to the last five years, reaching up to one million dollars for some immigrants.
While these policies have received support from some Republicans, they have been severely criticized by Democrats and even some moderate Republicans. Critics argue that the approach is not only inhumane but also ineffective.
Meanwhile, Trump’s proposal seeks to manage illegal immigration through a combination of financial incentives and harsher enforcement, it remains a deeply divisive issue with varying responses across the political spectrum.
