Longtime Musician Rips Britney Spears' Cover of His Song
Britney Spears was called out this week for "butchering" her cover of a hit song from 1988.
In 2004, Spears recorded a cover of Bobby Brown's single "My Prerogative." She released her version as part of her first greatest hits album titled, "Greatest Hits: My Prerogative."
During an appearance on Shannon Sharpe's "Club Shay Shay" podcast, Brown offered his blunt assessment of Spears' cover. He started off his rant by saying the iconic singer butchered "My Prerogative."
The "Every Little Step" singer expected more from Spears, especially since she was at the height of her popularity.
"Teddy Riley produced it, but that was a butchering that I- I couldn’t take it," Brown said, via Variety. "I cleared it only because it was Britney Spears and I was thinking… Teddy Riley is doing it too, so you know."
That experience with Spears changed the way Brown handles covers of his songs.
"I gotta hear it [in order for it to be cleared] because you don’t know what these kids will say these days. These kids say some shit that… you don’t want your song associated with it."
Fans of Brown's music had an awful lot to say about his recent remarks on Sharpe's podcast.
"I liked her version too she did it justice but your is better," one fan said.
"I wonder if he gets royalties and residuals from it because if he doesn't I completely understand because she did completely butcher it," another social media user wrote.
Spears has not yet responded to Brown's comments about her cover of "My Prerogative."
