Serena Williams’ Daughter Olympia Had a Skewed View of Sports for This Heartwarming Reason
Growing up with the Serena Williams as your mom is going to influence your view of sports. It just is. She’s the G.O.A.T., after all! And even though she’s retired from professional tennis, playing sports is still a big part of life for her and her kids Olympia, 7, and Adira, 1, who seem to be growing up with a love for the activity, too. When it comes to one sport in particular, Olympia has a very skewed view of what it means — and it’s all because of her dad, Alexis Ohanian.
Even though Williams plays tennis and is the ultimate soccer mom for her girls, Olympia plays golf with Ohanian. And because the caring girl dad makes it all about his daughter, she thinks golf is just a women’s sport!
“Having two Black daughters, in particular, helps me reframe even the most subtle things,” he shared in a video clip on Instagram from his Business Dad podcast. He shared that he takes Olympia golfing every Sunday, but he doesn’t know how to play golf. “I’m her Daddy Caddy,” the Reddit co-founder said, adding that he “never” plays himself.
“And so we’ll go out there, and I’m terrible, but we have a good instructor, who’s also a woman,” he continued. “We’ll start out on the driving range for about 30 minutes. We’ll hit balls and then she goes with Brittany, her instructor, and they go hit balls and do, like, real golf stuff.”
“It only dawned on me, recently, this whole time, Olympia thinks that golf is just for girls. But she also thinks that all the old white guys on the driving range are just dads waiting to pick up their daughters who play golf,” Ohanian explained with a laugh.
Oh my gosh, this is the cutest take ever! I love how she thinks women are the main character in golf — as she should! Can Olympia be President one day?
In the caption, Ohanian shared that seeing the world through his daughters’ eyes helps influence him and his work investing. “That lens, though? It’s everything,” Ohanian wrote. “It keeps me grounded in the work I care about, and that’s the future I’m trying to build with two daughters.”
Last month, Ohanian shared that he started this podcast to resist the common narrative that “success” for men is dominating the corporate world. “There is a healthier way to show masculinity that is all about ideas of excellence and greatness,” he said on Instagram. “Not just in the work that we do, but the families we build.”
He has also supported women’s sports with Williams, purchasing a stake in the National Women’s Soccer League Angel City Football Club in July 2020, partially in Olympia’s name, which made her the youngest person to co-own a professional sports team.
In the comments of Ohanian’s latest video, people praised the way he and Williams are teaching their daughters to take up space. “Teach her that she belongs in every space and every room she enters without a second thought. Brilliant,” one person wrote.
“He said watch my black daughter be better than yall and talk business on the golf course just like the boys bc she’s gonna be a force to reckon with! He said that’s right ❤️ that’s my girl,” someone else commented.
“Dude. That gave me warm and fuzzies. For real,” another person commented. “To see your daughter’s world view being shaped for power, and to talk about it, and to talk about the fact that who she is, and how she see’s the world is transformative for the world itself. Chef’s kiss ????????????❤️”
Ohanian is such a great dad, and we can’t wait to see what Olympia and Adira will do in the future with two parents who believe so fiercely in them in their corner.
