Flags lowered half-staff around NYC after Pope Francis’ death
NEW YORK (PIX11) – New York City Mayor Eric Adams has ordered all flags on city buildings to be lowered to half-staff following Pope Francis’ death on Monday.
The pope was 88 years old. He had been hospitalized earlier this year for a respiratory crisis, but was released and made several public appearances before his death.
“It is with great sadness that I mourn with billions around the world after learning of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” Adams said in a statement. “Pope Francis led with kindness, grace, and faith as he helped build a better world and unite all people, regardless of their background. His decades of spreading peace and love will forever be remembered.”
Adams visited the pope at the Vatican last May during a trip for the World Meeting on Human Fraternity.
The order for flags to be lowered begins immediately, according to the mayor's office.
