Instagram Makes Major Move Against TikTok Amid Possible Ban
The rivalry between the social media platforms Instagram and TikTok added another chapter this week as Instagram's parent company, Meta, officially rolled out a brand new app that will challenge TikTok's video editing capability.
On Tuesday, Meta officially launched its Edits video editing app – a standalone video editing app that offers features similar to the ones currently offered by TikTok's parent company, ByteDance.
The new app will allow users to shoot and edit video in the app, organize project ideas, and even utilize features like background replacement, automatic captioning, and AI tools that can turn images into video.
“There’s a lot going on in the world right now and no matter what happens, we think it’s our job to create the most compelling creative tools for those of you who make videos for not just Instagram but for platforms out there,” said Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, in a Reel posted in January announcing the app.
The new app rivals CapCut, the sister app to TikTok which allows users to create and edit videos for TikTok on their phone or computer.
The announcement of Instagram's new editing app comes as TikTok's future in the United States remains uncertain. The app has faced the prospect of a nationwide ban multiple times, with United States President Donald Trump extending the deadline for ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. operations for a second time. The new deadline is now in June.
If ByteDance does not divest TikTok's U.S. operations, the app will face an effective ban in the United States. With Instagram's launch of its Edits app, they appear to be looking to capitalize if this does happen. Even if TikTok is not banned, this still marks a clear attempt from Instagram to compete with TikTok.
