Rooney praises Man United target, identifies how club's recruitment can be better
Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha could be Manchester United’s first summer transfer window signing.
The Brazilian is United’s first choice for the number ten position. Having excelled in that position at Wolves, he is a perfect fit for manager Ruben Amorim.
United were willing to make a move for Chelsea star Cole Palmer, but after realising the impossibility of signing him, they shifted their focus to Cunha.
The former Atletico Madrid star wants to join the club, and it could only be a matter of time before the Red Devils secure his services.
Former Man United striker Wayne Rooney wants the club to sign players such as Cunha and not superstars, who can help them to be competitive over the next few years.
He told The Overlap: “I think he is a top player, and for Man United, it is difficult because many players have gone there with ability and reputation and have struggled over the last few years.
“I think Man United need to identify a core of players who can help sustain the club over the next two to three years.
“Instead of going for names which they’ve done in the past with (Romelu) Lukaku, (Paul) Pogba, Zlatan (Ibrahimovic). Going for superstars and names, which I do not think Cunha is at that level at the moment.
“The recruitment has to be miles better than what it has been, and they have to identify a group of players, a bit like what Liverpool have done over the last few years.
Cunha could take his career to the next level at United
Despite United’s struggles since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, the club has been able to sign world-class players.
However, they have struggled to transform the club, leading to their dire position. United may have now decided to sign players with less pedigree but with proven quality.
Cunha has been one of the league’s best players this season despite playing for a poor Wolves side.
He ranks joint-tenth for most goal contributions in the division, recording 14 goals and four assists in 28 games.
Having performed poorly at Atletico, Cunha has another chance to show that he is an elite footballer with a move to United, which could bode well for them.
