Netanyahu calls for full dismantling of Iran’s Nuclear Program
Netanyahu urged for the full dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program, stressing that no agreement is acceptable without complete elimination.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again called for the complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Speaking in Jerusalem on Sunday, April 27, Netanyahu emphasized that the only acceptable agreement would be one that completely eliminates Iran’s nuclear capabilities, similar to the 2003 deal that dismantled Libya’s weapons program.
According to a Reuters report, the United States and Iran, with Omani mediation, have conducted three rounds of indirect talks aimed at preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons and easing some economic sanctions. Despite these diplomatic efforts, Israel has consistently maintained that it will not allow Iran to become a nuclear-armed state.
Netanyahu also stressed that any future agreement must address Iran’s missile development programs, not just its nuclear activities. In his conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump, Netanyahu insisted that halting Iran’s missile advancements is crucial to ensuring regional stability. However, Trump reportedly indicated that he does not currently support any military operations against Iran.
Meanwhile, an Iranian official told Reuters that Iran’s missile program remains one of the major sticking points in the ongoing negotiations with the United States. Tensions have been exacerbated by Iran’s use of drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles in strikes against Israel during April and October 2024, in retaliation for the deaths of Iranian-linked military figures.
Despite ongoing diplomatic engagement, Netanyahu reaffirmed that Israel would act independently if necessary. “We are in close contact with the United States, but I made it clear: with or without an agreement, Iran will never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons,” he stated during his address..
The renewed tensions highlight the fragile nature of Middle Eastern security and the persistent challenge of containing Iran’s regional ambitions. As diplomatic efforts continue, the international community remains divided over the best approach to prevent nuclear proliferation while avoiding further escalation.
Netanyahu’s hardline stance reflects Israel’s deep-rooted security concerns and its commitment to unilaterally safeguard its national interests if required. The coming months are likely to be crucial as diplomatic negotiations either progress towards a broader understanding or give way to heightened conflict and instability.
