The AFJC announced the winners of the 2025 Afghanistan Journalist of the Year Award, recognizing outstanding journalistic contributions across media.
The Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) has announced the winners of the 2025 Afghanistan Journalist of the Year Award. The winners were revealed on Monday, April 28, following a competitive program. The awardees include Nasrin Saidy from Radio Sarhad, Mohammad Yusuf Mengal from Pajhwok News Agency, Azizullah Wahdat from Tamadon TV, Ramin Mazhar from Afghanistan International TV, and Ehsanullah Karimi, an independent journalist.
In his speech, Ahmed Qureshi, Executive Director of the Afghanistan Journalists Center, emphasized the challenges faced by journalists in Afghanistan since the Taliban’s takeover. He stressed the critical role of local journalists in these competitions, particularly under the current circumstances.
Qureshi also highlighted that reporters from over 50 local media outlets, alongside international outlets focused on Afghanistan, participated in this year’s competition. This broad participation underscores the resilience of Afghanistan’s journalists despite the increasing risks and restrictions they face.
Belgian officials and international representatives, speaking at the event, underscored the importance of freedom of expression. They also emphasized the role of media in promoting democracy and human rights in Afghanistan, which remain under significant threat.
The “Journalist of the Year” award has been held annually since 2013. Over the years, 22 journalists from various media organizations have received this prestigious award. This initiative continues to highlight the courage and dedication of Afghanistan’s journalists working under challenging conditions.
Despite the prevailing threats and restrictions, Afghanistan’s journalists continue to show resilience and commitment to truth and reporting. This award celebrates their courage in the face of adversity, offering recognition for their crucial role in shaping public discourse in Afghanistan.
