Apple Juice Brand Announces Massive Recall For 'Toxic Substance'
A prominent apple juice brand has been forced to recall a massive number of bottles of apple juice as a result of a potential toxic substance.
This week, Martinelli's has announced a recall of more than 170,000 bottles of apple juice because there is a chance that their contents have contaminated by patulin, a toxic substance that is produced by some fungi.
"To date, we have not had any reported health issues related to the recall," Martinelli's said in a statement emailed to CBS MoneyWatch.
"Martinelli's has worked with those retailers that received the product and the retailers have removed anything that still remained in inventory. No other production dates or Martinelli's products are affected by this recall, " it added.
It's worth noting that the recall is listed as Class II, which indicates that the affected product may "cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote," according to FDA guidelines.
Side effects of consuming patulin can include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
The recall covers bottles distributed to 28 different states throughout the country: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississppi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
The bottles that have been impacted by the recall have a "best by" date of December 5, 2026, and a UPC code of: 0 41244 04102 2.
