Judd Apatow to curate new comedy film exhibition at Academy Museum: “The cat’s out of the bag!”
Judd Apatow is making a trip to the museum a little funnier.
The writer, director and producer will be the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures' first guest curator of its newest comedy film exhibition focused on celebrating the comedy genre and filmmakers.
During a special event on May 2 at the Academy Museum, Apatow and several cast members of The 40-Year-Old Virgin reunited to celebrate the film and mark the museum’s 20th anniversary. Held in the David Geffen Theater, the evening featured a screening of Apatow’s breakout comedy and a lively onstage conversation with Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Jane Lynch, Gerry Bednob, and Kat Dennings. The group shared personal stories, behind-the-scenes memories and reflected on how the film came to life.
“The cat is out of the bag! I’ll be working with the Academy Museum to showcase some of my favorite films and filmmakers throughout the ages,” said Apatow. “I am honored to curate this project alongside the museum’s talented team and with access to the Academy Collection. We hope to leave visitors inspired and, of course, with a big smile on their faces.”
The Academy Museum is planning its first comedy-focused exhibition for April 2027, with Apatow at the helm. Drawing from the Academy’s extensive archives, the exhibit will explore the craft of film comedy through rare materials and fresh insights from a range of filmmakers.
“We’re thrilled to announce that our first guest curator at the Academy Museum is none other than the hilarious and brilliant Judd Apatow,” said Academy Museum Director and President Amy Homma. “Judd’s comedies have shaped entertainment and culture, and we know his expertise, appreciation, and love for the art of comedy will bring a unique exhibition to our audiences.”
