'Practical Magic' Announces Long-Awaited Sequel—27 Years Later
Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are ready to make some onscreen magic—for the second time.
Nearly one year after it was announced that the two megastars were in talks to resurrect Practical Magic, their beloved 1998 supernatural fantasy/crime thriller, an official date for the film’s release has been set: September 18, 2026.

Kidman lent her voice to Warner Bros.’ social media announcement, casting a spell to reveal the date: “Tooth of wolf and morning dew, something old and something new,” the Oscar-winning actress says. “Let the spell begin to mix. September 18, 2026.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier will direct the sequel, which will serve as a reunion not just for Kidman and Bullock, but for both actresses and Bier.

Kidman and Bier worked together on the 2020 HBO series The Undoing, co-starring Hugh Grant, as well as the recent Netflix hit show The Perfect Couple. In 2018, Bier and Bullock collaborated on their own Netflix project: the post-apocalyptic feature Bird Box.
While Practical Magic didn’t make much of a dent in the box office when it was originally released, it has spent the past quarter-century gaining a large cult fandom. In the film, Kidman and Bullock play Gillian and Sally Owens, respectively—sisters descended from a long line of witches, who are doing their best to responsibly deal with their ability to make the seemingly impossible happen.
The film, which was based on Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel of the same name, was directed by Griffin Dunne from a script by Robin Swicord, Akiva Goldsman, and Adam Brooks. All three scribes are also being credited with writing the upcoming sequel.
