Ryan Coogler Shows True Character During Interview with Variety
Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" had an impressive run as the world's No. 1 film, an incredible accomplishment for one of the best young directors in Hollywood.
After successful adaptations and films like "Fruitvale Station" and the "Black Panther" series for Marvel, Coogler has branched out with his first original film. "Sinners" stars Michael B. Jordan and features several other top actors like Hailee Steinfeld.
During an interview with Variety, Coogler reflected on how the film has been received as well as those who have assisted him along the way.

"We've been really gracious that the audience has shown up," Coogler said, including his wife Zinzi in the conversation.
"The people have been enjoying the film projections where they can and the different formats, it's meant the world to us. I think the biggest thing is seeing people go repeat times and people having watch parties, taking time off from work to see it and discuss it...that's when you're in rarified air as artists."
Coogler said that the significance of the moment is not lost on him or his wife, and that they truly appreciate the positive reception.
"It doesn't always happen like that, so we're sure to recognize it and value it and just say thanks to the audience as much as we can."
Commenters on social media noticed that Coogler directed attention to himself and his wife during the interview, and they praised him for his selflessness and humility.
"We, Us, Our I love how he speaks so inclusive of his wife," one comment said.
"I love the obvious admiration and partnership between the two of them. The way she’s smiling at him with such pride and he constantly says “our/us” although he’s the one being addressed," said another comment.
"Interviewer address Ryan Coogler Ryan (whose wife co-produced Sinners): 'us' 'we' what a gem," one reply read, noting that Zinzi Coogler is credited as a producer on the film, enjoying the same successes as her husband.
This week, Sinners has been unseated at the top by Marvel's "Thunderbolts*," but it has been impressive after weeks of its initial release, and is expected to end the year as one of 2025's highest-grossing films.
