Kevin Durant: I ‘Rejoice’ Over Ruining LeBron James, Kyrie Irving Dynasty
While Kevin Durant wasn’t the sole factor in Kyrie Irving’s departure from the Cleveland Cavaliers, many fans believe he played a significant part in creating one of the NBA’s “what if” scenarios.
Irving was joined by LeBron James, who returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014-15 after spending the first seven years of his career with the franchise. James then went to the Miami Heat for four seasons before re-signing with the Cavaliers.
In three years together in Cleveland, James and Irving led the Cavaliers to the NBA finals each season, winning one title. However, both of their losses in the championship came at the hands of the Golden State Warriors, with the final loss a 4-1 series defeat to a budding dynasty headlined by Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.
Irving joined the Boston Celtics following that NBA finals loss, and while the Cavaliers made it to the championship the following season, they lost to the Warriors again. James opted to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers one year later, and the Cavaliers have not returned to the promised land since.
On Friday, May 9, 2025, a fan posted a clip of Irving on the Cavaliers playing alongside James, and another replied to the post while tagging Durant to blame him for ruining a potential dynasty.
"oh man @KDTrey5 f*** you bro for ruining what would have been a dynasty in Cleveland," wrote the fan.
Durant replied with three crying laughing emojis and sent a simple message back:
"I rejoice every morning that it didn’t happen," Durant wrote.
