I stuck a caravan in my garden for an extra room with no planning permission – my grandkids love it & it’s got a kitchen
A WOMAN has revealed that she stuck an old caravan at the bottom of her garden so she would have an extra room.
Not only does Julie now have a cosy place to relax and a space for her grandchildren to play in, but she didn’t even need planning permission for it.
In most cases, you do not need planning permission to have a caravan in your garden if it is used as an additional living space for the household and not as a primary residence or for business purposes.
You won’t need to get planning permission if a caravan placed in your garden is used as an extension of your home and it’s also fine for temporary use for short stays and as a guest bedroom.
Savvy mum Julie took to social media to show off her old caravan, which she calls her “garden room”.
The part-time florist and clothes addict, who loves bagging a bargain, confirmed that her caravan – which she has called Dorothy – is named after her grandmother.
Showing off the dated caravan, the content creator beamed: “So this is Dorothy – she is at the caravan at the end of my garden.”
Giving her 23,700 followers a close-up look inside the caravan, which has been vibrantly decorated, Julie, who loves boot sales and charity shops, added: “You go inside, we’ve got a little seating area which is good for the babies cause they can’t fall off.”
Not only is there a kitchen area in the caravan, which has been given a glow up with floral wallpaper, but there’s also a bedroom space too.
Julie proudly filmed around the small but mighty caravan, which is packed full with cosy cushions and decorative signs.
She then continued: “This is my little kitchen area and my grandson has ripped some of the wallpaper out today, so I’m gonna have to think about getting some sticky back plastic and putting it on there.
“This is the bed area where you will find me lounged later on this evening, reading a book or whatever.”
Julie described the caravan as a “very calming” space and beamed: “The kids love it here and so do I.”
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @flowersjulieby, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly racked up 54,800 views.
Not only this, but it’s also amassed 1,162 likes and 87 comments.

Social media users were impressed with Dorothy the caravan and many eagerly flocked to the comments to express this.
Alongside a love heart eye emoji, one person said: “I love this.”

And then, of course, there’s the cost.
Staying in a caravan is definitely way cheaper than my international trips.
With no expensive hotel bills and the ability to cook my own meals, I’m spending hundreds less than I would abroad.
I’ve had some of my best and most relaxing holidays in caravans. Maybe I’ll buy my own one day.
