Morning Briefing: Edwin Díaz Now Third On Mets’ All-Time Saves List
Good morning, Mets fans!
Backed by another gem from Kodai Senga and his signature ghost fork, the Mets edged out a 2-1 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday. Brett Baty hit went yard yet again, this time a go-ahead solo shot. With Senga’s strong performance, his ERA pretty much stood pat at 1.22. Baty’s OPS climbed to .791, which is tied for the team lead outside of the big three. He also now has four home runs in his past five games.
Edwin Díaz also notched his ninth save of the season, giving him 125 as a Met — moving him past Jeurys Familia for sole possession of third on the franchise’s all-time saves list.

As part of a long statement on ineligibility status, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has removed a number of deceased players from Major League Baseball’s permanently ineligible list. Included in this removal are all-time hit king Pete Rose and 1919 “Black Sox” conspirator Shoeless Joe Jackson. They are now eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame, effective 2027. The Cubs called up slugging first base prospect Moisés Ballesteros for his MLB debut Tuesday. He was playing MLB the Show when he got his call-up to the actual show. “My emotion was like throwing the controller. I was in shock for five or 10 minutes,” Ballesteros said (via Jesse Rogers of ESPN).
The oldest active player in baseball is attempting another return to the majors, as Rich Hill has inked a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals. If Hill, who is now at a ripe 45 years of age, does in fact find his way back in the big leagues, he will suit up for his 14th team.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed Rōki Sasaki on the injured list due to right shoulder impingement. According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, the Dodgers were originally unsure whether Sasaki would require an IL stint. He’s now officially been lost to the IL. In any case, it’s not an ideal situation for the rookie flamethrower. He’s shown flashes of potential, particularly with his impressive split-finger, but overall, it’s been a somewhat disappointing start to his debut season.
Clayton Kershaw is set to return Saturday to make his season debut, according to Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts. Kershaw missed all of the 2024 postseason and has been recovering from left knee and foot surgeries.
