Imran Khan agrees to talks with Shehbaz sharif Government
Imran Khan has agreed to hold talks with the Shehbaz Sharif government, marking a shift from his earlier refusal of dialogue.
On Thursday, The News International, reported that former Prime Minister Imran Khan has expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with the government led by Shehbaz Sharif. This marks a significant reversal from his earlier stance, in which he refused to negotiate with civilian authorities and insisted on direct talks with the military.
According to the report, Khan has accepted an invitation from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and has authorized Gohar Ali Khan, head of his political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), to initiate talks with the government. The decision followed a meeting between Gohar Ali Khan and Imran Khan inside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Monday, May 12.
The discussions are said to be taking place behind closed doors, with no media coverage and full confidentiality. This secrecy reflects the politically sensitive nature of the negotiations as the country remains divided on the role of PTI and its imprisoned leader in Pakistan’s political future.
Imran Khan, who has been held at Adiala Jail for nearly two years, faces multiple charges including corruption and terrorism. Earlier this year, he was sentenced to over ten years in prison on corruption-related charges, though his party continues to claim the charges are politically motivated.
PTI had previously rejected all talks with the ruling coalition and accused the government of corruption and election rigging. While the party has made multiple overtures to the military for negotiations, none of those efforts have yielded results so far.
Shehbaz Sharif recently extended an invitation for PTI to join national dialogue efforts during a public parliamentary session. In response, Gohar Ali Khan agreed in principle but emphasized that no decisions would be made without Imran Khan’s direct approval, highlighting the continued centrality of Khan in PTI’s political strategy.
Imran Khan’s willingness to engage in talks could signal a turning point in Pakistan’s volatile political landscape. However, with deep mistrust between the parties and unresolved legal battles, whether these talks will result in tangible reconciliation or political stability remains to be seen.
