Chappell asked Lorde if she was non-binary, to which she replied: “I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.”
“I know that’s not a very satisfying answer but there’s a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up,” she went on to explain.
Lorde said her idea of gender began to change in 2023 when she tried on a pair of men’s jeans and sent the photo to her Virgin collaborator Jim-E Stack.
He responded: “I want to see the you that’s in this picture represented in the music.”
Then, while writing one of the songs that appears on Virgin called “Man of the Year,” she said she tried to visualize how her gender felt in that moment, dressed in men’s jeans, with duct tape on her chest, similar to her Met Gala look this year.
The conversation follows an interview with Document Journal, in which she discussed her musical rebirth starting with “What Was That.”
“I had come back from London to New York after this period of great turbulence in my personal life. Becoming single, but also really facing my body stuff head-on, and starting to feel my gender broadening a little bit,” she explained.
She also confirmed more details about her relationship split.
