Mountain snow in May: Late-season flakes will impact Mt. Hood

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Late-season snow returns to Oregon as the Cascade peaks prepare for a healthy dose of May snow.

Summer heat has already found its way into parts of the Pacific Northwest this spring, but now the snow is on its way again. High-elevation snow isn't unusual for the month of May. Nearly a foot of snow is possible for the peak of Mt. Hood this weekend.

Snowy conditions will be found as low as 4,000' by Sunday morning. Snow below 6,000' will likely melt on roads and other paved surfaces rapidly. Mountain pass travelers may find a few snowy roads and low visibility at times during periods of heavy snow.

The lower snow elevations are possible around the Timberline Lodge area through the start of next week. The Pacific Northwest's latest round of cooler and wetter weather patterns will slowly fade by the end of next week.
